FIVE THINGS: CHILDREN'S BOOKS

As a mother and a teacher of little ones, I read a lot more children's books than I do anything else.
Here is a short list of five beautifully illustrated, unique, sweet stories
that I genuinely enjoy reading, over and over and over and over again.

If You Want to See a Whale by Julie Fogliano.
Imaginative and lovely. A must.

The Girl with the Bird's-nest Hair by Sarah Dyer.
I always tell Ramona she has bird's-nest hair, and Sarah Dyer is just awesome.

A Sick Day for Amos McGee by Phillip C. Stead.
This story is too sweet for words, teaching compassion and the value of friendship.
It's even sweeter knowing that it was written and illustrated by a husband and wife duo.

One by Kathryn Otoshi
A simple and beautiful story that teaches children how to count,
while also teaching them to stand up and make a difference.

Cats, Cats, Cats! by Leslea Newman.
This poetic book rolls off of your tongue so beautifully,
and oh my, the watercolors! It is just so good.

What are some of your favorite children's books that you've recently discovered
or have gotten you through that bedtime dance time and time again?
I'm volunteering in a 1st and 2nd grade blend, so I'm trying to get my hands on every book or song
dealing with the theme of diversity and social justice.
Stay tuned for that compilation.

Here's to a great week ahead,
one full of warm bedtime snuggles and good books!

  2. thank you for these recommendations! i'm always on the search for well-done, meaningful, and beautiful children's books -- not only for my ramona but for me as well. our favorites recently are "all the world" "animals should definitely not wear clothing" "leonardo the terrible monster" and "i want my hat back."

i hadn't heard of many of these titles you listed here and am now anxiously awaiting their arrival at the library.

    1. I haven't heard of any of those with the exception of "i want my hat back." I'll have to look for them! The library here in Portland carried all of these except the Sarah Dyer book, so I'm assuming you'll find the same. I hope you're able to find them, thanks Emily!
